A Maryland mother was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend in an apparent murder-suicide, according to police per PEOPLE.

The Prince George County Police Department said officers found 32-year-old Tequia Nails with gunshot wounds at her home last week in Fairmount Heights. Nails was pronounced dead at the scene.

The following day, 26-year-old Quindell Mercer, who was Nails' ex-boyfriend, was found dead in Washington D.C. Police believe Mercer shot Nails before fleeing the scene.

According to her obituary, Nails was the mother of four children — an eight-year-old son, a three-year-old daughter, and two-month-old twins. Family members said Mercer was the father of the twins and opened fire while Nails was holding one of their children.

Loved ones added that Mercer shot Nails after she repeatedly told him to leave and had expressed she didn't want to be in a relationship with him.

"It’s traumatic,” a neighbor told local outlets. “I couldn’t imagine no child growing up like that -- like it’s bad you wouldn’t want to see no child grow up like that for a person to be holding her newborn child.”

“We're falling apart,” Nails' father said. "Everybody can't believe it. It's Kiki."
